What is rootkit? - a definition from Whatis.com - see also: rootkits
We've all heard about bugs, virus, malware, spies, and who knows what else that wicked, sometimes senseless, more often criminal people install on other people's computers, normally to enrich themselves in some way, We spend fortunes, and a lot of time, on expensive Antivirus programmes, we check from time to time, and we can't figure out why our PC is soooooo slow!
Many of you heard about "ROOTKITS"? (This link will tell you a lot more, but basically it's a sort of posh, cunning system that hides Virus and other bugs so your Antivirus can't see it).
I'd heard about them, and I didn't like the sound of it at all, since the word "root" implies the basis of everything!
So, I found out a little more about them, some years ago, and found and installed a small programme, free of charge, from "AVG Free" the system I use, with great success, for my anti virus control.
The programme is called "AVG Anti Rootkit Control" and you can have it as well.(Just do a search using the terms "AVG Anti rootkit").
Important? Well....
I normally pass the check about once a month or so (they suggest that once a week is better) and to date (at least this morning) I was always presented with a screen which announce (to my pride and joy) "Congratulations - nothing found!"
This morning, however, I found my PC to be in a slow, sluggish condition, needing reboots to get going!
So I passed the AV programme, the Anti-spy programme, and apart from the "spy" cookies that one has to accept to be able to use a programme at all (and ALL programmes have them, free or paid for programmes) nothing untoward was discovered, but my PC just didn't seem to want to know!
Must be tired, poor thing - thought I, but "just because" I decided to pass the "Anti Rootkit programme" - I had already successfully passed it only a week or so ago, but it doesn't take so long, so - pass it again!
AND.... there it was, a small individual entry "hidden application" - No congratulations this time, just the terse message - You got one, baby!
OK - repair (by clicking on "solve problem" button). Up came a screen telling me that I could cause immeasurable damage to my system, making it unbootable, if I continued.
On the basis that this thing hadn't been present just a week ago, and since I hadn't installed anything new since then, I closed my eyes and punched the "solve problem" button!
No - it didn't explode, but politely asked me to restart the PC, and would I like to do so right now!
I did! Then I watched with doom stricken eyes to see if anything nasty was going to happen (like last gasp messages, or that infamous blue screen). Well - a little message came up, from "AVG Antiroot" - this time saying "CONGRATULATIONS - YOU JUST DELETED A HIDDEN ROOTKIT APPLICATION - successfully!"
Now I'll be passing that check once a week, and for the moment, my PC seems to be working just fine!
I'm off to see what other little nasties are hiding in the corners!
If you don't hear from me again - I'm DEAD, and so is my PC!
Old, used balls welcome....!
